CORPUS CHRISTI (January 30, 2014) Three oil workers were killed and a dozen children were injured when a van slammed into the back of a school bus Thursday in South Texas.
The accident occurred shortly before 7 a.m. Thursday as the driver of the Three Rivers school district bus was attempting to make a turn.
Superintendent Kenneth Rohrbach says the bus was stopped as the driver waited for another vehicle to turn and make way for the bus.
The van, in which seven workers were headed home after completing their shift, collided with the rear of the stopped bus.
Three died and four others were taken to hospitals.
Investigators say the driver of the van may have fallen asleep.
Rohrbach says there were 12 students on the bus who suffered bumps and bruises.
At least three were taken to a hospital for observation.
