Vandals Damage Nearly 90 Headstones At Texas Cemetery

LONGVIEW (May 30, 2014) Vandals have damaged nearly 90 headstones at Greenwood Cemetery in Longview.

The vandals moved some of the stones and knocked over and damaged others, authorities said.

Older headstones, including some obelisks, were toppled and broken into pieces.

Police believe the vandalism occurred Tuesday.

The cemetery association is considering whether to raise money to install surveillance cameras.

Some of the older headstones could cost as much as $1,000 to repair.

Thefts and vandalism have been reported at other cemeteries in East Texas.

In Van Zandt County, two people were arrested this week for stealing brass from gravesites, authorities said.
