TEMPLE (September 13, 2013)-- A veteran walked into a public restroom early Monday at the Temple VA hospital and shot himself has died, police confirmed Friday.

VA officials have not announced the death, but the VA was advised Tuesday the man had died, Temple police spokesman Cpl. Christopher M Wilcox said Friday.

The veteran's name has not been released.

The incident happened just before 8 a.m. Monday at the Olin E. Teague Veterans’ Medical Center at 1901 Veterans Memorial Drive.

The veteran, whose name was not released, was taken to the hospital’s urgent care unit and then transferred to Scott & White Hospital.

He was alone at the time of the shooting, the VA said in a statement, and his daughter has been notified.

The man was being treated at the facility, but officials wouldn't comment on whether he had an appointment Monday.

Guns are not allowed in the facility, which does not have metal detectors at entrances.

“We are conducting a full review of the circumstances surrounding this case to identify potential lessons learned so we can further enhance our Suicide Prevention Program,” the VA said in a statement.

The hospital has three full-time suicide prevention coordinators and what it describes as a robust prevention program aimed at identifying and helping veterans who are coping with issues ranging from chronic health problems to struggles to transition back to civilian life.

The VA said it was offering counseling to employees and patients because of the incident.
