Man Caught On Video Stealing Local Store Employee’s Phone

WACO (June 18, 2014) Waco police are looking for a man who made off with an employee’s cellphone during a bold robbery at a Waco clothing store.

The robbery happened in late May at Amelia’s Exchange at the Central Texas Marketplace.

Surveillance footage released to the public shows a man near the cash register inside the store appearing as if he’s about to buy something.

But while workers at the counter weren’t looking, he stole an employee’s cellphone and runs out the front door.

Floor manager Leslie Cates was there to see it all unfold.

"I guess they had their backs turned for about five seconds and then he grabbed it," Cates said.

Cates calls the theft disgusting, and was surprised someone would steal something in front of so many people.

The phone didn’t go far though; the employee used the “Find My iPhone” app and hunted it down at a kiosk inside the Richland Mall.

The thief however hasn’t been caught yet. Cates wants to get the word out though to protect other stores.

"If it can happen here then it can happen anywhere," Cates said.

Waco Police still needs help identifying the man in the video. If you know who he is, call Waco Crime Stoppers at 254-753-HELP.
