Wind-Whipped Fire Destroys Texas Apartment Complex

HOUSTON (March 25, 2014) A wind-driven fire Tuesday destroyed a high-rise apartment complex that was under construction in Houston as about 200 first responders worked to keep the flames from spreading to other nearby buildings.

Much of the high-rise structure was reduced to rubble Tuesday by wind-driven flames.

Houston Fire Department spokesman Capt. Ruy Lozano told the Houston Chronicle that the only people inside were construction workers and it is believed they all got out safely.

He said one man was rescued as he prepared to jump to safety.

The dramatic fire was reported at around 12:30 p.m. and was upgraded to a five-alarm call about an hour later.

Officials said it was under control by mid-afternoon.
