WESTMINSTER (August 26, 2013)—A 16-month-old girl died Sunday in Westminster in Collin County after a 4-year-old sibling started a pickup and the truck rolled forward, striking the toddler.
The 4-year-old got the keys to the truck while the children’s father was gathering things to pack in the pickup, John Norton, a spokesman with the Collin County Sheriff's office, said.
The child started the engine and then put the truck, which had a standard transmission, into neutral, he said.
The truck rolled forward, struck the toddler, and then ran into a neighbor’s fence.
Norton says the children’s father ran outside when he heard the truck start, but didn't get there in time.
Westminster is about an hour north of Dallas.
