Animal Advocates Speak Out At City Council Meeting

By: Nadia Galindo Email

WACO (November 20, 2012) -- Animal advocates spoke out at tonight's city council meeting because they say the Waco Humane Society euthanized 64 animals yesterday.

"It's a shame that any of them are euthanized its even more discouraging that no contacts were made to assist in getting the animals out," Julie Morris, animal activist said.

Representatives of the Waco Animal Alliance, which is composed of local animal rescue groups, say the Humane Society did not contact any of the rescue groups to see if they would be able to take the animals until an hour before they were euthanized.

"Right now the shelter is killing a lot of animals and they are not reaching out to rescue groups," Amy Oakley, McLennan Animal Rescue Coalition president said. "We are in support of the city looking at employing a full-time position of a rescue coordinator that would be able to work directly with rescue groups."

Animal advocates say they will continue to attend city council meetings until their concerns with the Waco Humane Society are addressed.

"We are committed to this and we are serious about wanting to be a voice for the animals," Oakley said.
