China Spring, Texas -- George Kazanas, Superintendent of Schools, China Spring ISD, received his Doctorate in Education from Tarleton State University at a ceremony held at the Stephenville campus of the University in May 2008.
The degree is the culmination of three and a half years of study, including coursework and a dissertation study. Dr. Kazanas’ dissertation entitled, “A Study of Induction and Mentoring as an Occupational Socialization Process for First-Time Texas Principals,” investigated the experiences of first year principals in the state of Texas, collecting statewide data on the induction period that principals participate in as they acclimate into their new leadership positions. The Texas Education Code mandates an induction program be initiated to help first year principals learn the skills needed to be successful in their role. Dr. Kazanas’ study posed the question of whether or not such programs exist and if they make a difference for these individuals. The conclusion of his study determined that the state may mandate these programs, but for the vast majority of principals, there was little to no formal induction programs.
Dr. Kazanas began his career in education after earning a Bachelor of Business Administration degree at Baylor University where he also obtained his teaching certificate. Upon graduation, he taught business education classes at West High School. In 1994, Kazanas located to China Spring, Texas, and served as the assistant principal at China Spring Middle School. Continuing his service at China Spring ISD, Kazanas became the principal of the Middle School, then the Assistant Superintendent, and finally the Superintendent in 1999. He has been Superintendent of the District since that time. In 2004, Kazanas was named a Regional Superintendent of the Year by the Texas Association of School Boards.
During his tenure, China Spring has experienced sustained growth in the student population, adding some 640 students since the 1999-2000 school year. This growth has spurred two successful bond elections. Student achievement has continued to improve, with the district receiving Texas Education Agency’s “Exemplary or Recognized” status 8 out of the 9 years of Kazanas’ tenure as superintendent.
John Palmer, President of the Board of Trustees of the China Spring ISD, congratulated Kazanas saying, “As a school board, we are very proud of Dr. Kazanas’ educational accomplishment. His commitment to personal lifelong learning is an outstanding example for the students in our district.”
