WACO, Texas– The Waco Third Thursday “Movies in the Square” series has been a great success, with an
estimated 5,800 individuals attending Shrek, Madagascar and Happy Feet.
The summer series will conclude August 21st with the free showing of the 1993 football classic, Rudy.

The portable 20 x 40 foot screen will again be provided by Alamo Drafthouse’s Rolling Roadshow tour.

Rudy, the inspirational true story of Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger will begin at 8:45 p.m. , following the communitywide pep rally at 6:30 p.m. and a spirit competition held by Star 92.9’s Dustin and Beth.

ESPN 1660’s Paul Catalina will be on hand to kick off the Central Texas football season with his predictions of high school teams and players to watch.

Mayor Virginia DuPuy will proclaim August 21st, 2008, “Reicher Football Day,” honoring 2007 State Football Champion Reicher Catholic High School.

Entertainment will include special performances by the Waco High School cheerleaders, Heart O’ Texas Cheerleaders, and local barbershop quartet Heritage Square. Child ID kits, promoting child safety, will be available for free to the first 1000 children in attendance.
In addition, free popcorn will be provided by the Marriott Residence Inn, and other concessions will be available for sale, including barbecue and sausage-on-a-stick by Robinson ISD FFA, iced coffee, tea and frozen bananas by the World Hunger Relief Farm Village Store, funnel cakes by Reicher Catholic High School, and drinks, cotton candy, snow cones and candy by the Heart O’ Texas Sweethearts.

Attendees should plan on bringing their own chairs and blankets to enjoy the movie.

The movie is being presented for free, thanks to the title sponsors, Educator’s Credit Union and Central National Bank. Waco Third Thursday is the creation of the Greater Waco Chamber and Heritage Square Waco.

The goal of the event is to continue to re-establish downtown as Waco’s entertainment destination and raise awareness of existing downtown businesses.
