Local Student To Attend Presidential Inauguration Save Email Print

Garrett McPherson, an eighth grader at Liberty Hill Middle School has been selected to attend the Junior Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference (JrPYIC) being held in Washington, D.C. in January.

He will have an opportunity to meet many of today’s political leaders, learn more about our country’s electoral process, and witness first hand the inaurural parade, as the President and Vice President and their families proceed from the United States Capitol Building to the White House. He will also be attending a Black Tie Gala Inaugural Ball to further celebrate this monumental event. He will hear keynote speakers Former Secretary of State, General Colin L Powell, USA (Ret.) and Nobel Peace Price winner and former Vice President Al Gore.

Garrett is actively involved in his school and his community. He is a member of the National Junior Honor Society, the Liberty Hill M.S. Honors Band, and he is a member of the Youth Council at East Side Baptist Church in Killeen. He also plays football and basketball for Liberty Hill Middle School, as well as participating on the track team.

During off seasons he plays baseball and soccer, additionally. Garrett has earned the KISD Academic Acheivement award for the past two years. He recently was selected to play his Baritone Saxophone in the Regional Band Concert in Copperas Cove.

Garrett attended the National Young Leader’s Junior Conference in Washington, D.C. in December 2006 and the National Young Leader’s Alumni Conference in Boston, MA in July 2007. He will be attending the National Young Leader’s State Conference in Dallas this November.
Garrett is the son of U.S. Army Major Kevin and Shirley McPherson. He has been attending KISD schools since August 2002 and throughout his years at Killeen schools has achieved many honors and recognitions, including a Presidential Academic Award in 5th grade and winning 1st place in the 2007-2008 UIL seventh grade science competition.
