KILLEEN (November 17, 2009)—The Department of Veterans Affairs said Tuesday it will leave three Mobile Vet Centers in the Fort Hood area through next Monday to continue to provide counseling to area residents, regardless of military service, in the aftermath of the shooting rampage on Nov. 5 at Fort Hood that left 13 dead and 29 injured.
More than 1,700 veterans, soldiers, military family members and civilians have received counseling and emotional support at the centers and at the Killeen-Heights Vet Center since the shooting, the VA said.
“We’ve spent a lot of time speaking with both military and civilian workers who are feeling anxiety as a result of events,” said Michelle Milonas, team leader, New Orleans Vet Center, an on-site MVC counselor.
“We’ve been able to answer questions and provide therapy in this time of need.”
The mobile centers, which are at the Super Wal-Mart at 1400 Lowes Blvd. in Killeen, the Wal-Mart in Copperas Cove and at the Clearcreek Commissary at Fort Hood, are open daily from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. and will stay open later if necessary.
Appointments aren’t necessary.
“The Ford Hood event has caused traumatic memories to resurface of the 1991 Luby’s massacre here in Killeen,” said Bob Gombeski, team leader, Killeen Vet Center, and RCS Regional Manager's Office Mission Liaison.
“This is one of the reasons why we are seeing anyone who wants to be seen regardless of military service.”
The permanent Killeen-Heights Vet Center is at 302 Millers Crossing in Harker Heights.
