KILLEEN (March 10, 2010)—The Killeen City Council gave unanimous approval Tuesday night to a housing ordinance that limits the number of unrelated adults who may live in a single-family home to three.

The ordinance also says anyone renting a home must sign a lease for a minimum of 30 days.

The council debated the ordinance for months.

Council members say the ordinance is intended to keep single-family neighborhoods intact.

Some residents said they hope the tougher ordinance will crack down on boarding houses in their neighborhoods that they say rent rooms by the night.

A maximum of 3 unrelated persons under the same roof is an extremely common part of the definition of "family" in city ordinances.
