ROSEBUD (June 16, 2009)—A Central Texas man was in custody Tuesday evening after an incident that started Tuesday morning with a threatening note that was left on the windshield of a Rosebud woman’s car.
Rosebud Police Chief Jeremiah Shultz got an arrest warrant charging terroristic threat and set out to find Sonny Garcia Perez after the man’s estranged wife reported the note, which said “I need to talk...no cops…or I’ll blow up the house.”
The search ended Tuesday afternoon almost exactly where it started; at the wife’s house at West Ave. B and South 3rd Street near downtown Rosebud after a neighbor called to report seeing Perez enter the home.
Shultz responded and said he ordered Perez to come out.
Perez refused, and moments later Shultz said he heard two loud bangs from inside the home and then the left side of the house exploded in flames.
The fire was so hot that firefighters weren’t able to check the house to see if Perez was inside until the flames were extinguished.
The wife, whose name was not released, was not inside when the house exploded and caught on fire and was seen sitting in a patrol car while crews battled the flames.
Police arrested the wanted man’s aunt while the fire was still burning after she slapped Shultz.
Then one of the wife’s relatives reported seeing Perez changing clothes behind a barn several blocks away.
Shultz headed to the barn and yelled for Perez to come out.
Instead Perez ran.
Shultz followed, and about five blocks later caught up with the wanted man, whom he tackled and handcuffed.
No one was injured in the incident.
A neighboring home was temporarily evacuated until the fire was extinguished.
