HAMILTON County (July 01, 2009)-A pregnant Lampasas woman and her unborn child both died when the woman was ejected from the back of a moving truck during a two-vehicle collision Tuesday night.
The accident occurred around 8:20 p.m. near the intersection of State Highway 22 and Farm-to-Market 1602 about 10 miles northeast of Hamilton.
A 1997 Ford Pick-Up Truck was traveling northeast on SH 22, followed by a 1994 Kenworth semi-tractor-trailer.
Texas Department of Public Safety Dispatcher Garcia told News 10 the Ford truck signaled right but turned left into the eighteen-wheeler, which was attempting to pass on the left in a no-passing zone.
Heather Ann Smith, 18, was riding in the bed of the Ford truck at the time of the accident and was ejected from the vehicle.
Smith, pregnant approximately seven months, died at the scene along with her unborn child; area Justice of the Peace Lively declared her time of death at 9:35 p.m.
Five others occupied the Ford truck including the driver, Wesley Kepler, of Lampasas, passengers Kasey Kepler, 22, of Lampasas and Michael Wilson, 39, of Commanche, while Raymond Smith, 19, and Kayla Bench, 18, both of Lampasas, rode in the back of the truck with the deceased, Heather Ann Smith.
Wesley Kepler, Michael Wilson and Raymond Smith were taken to Scott and White Hospital in Temple while Kasey Kepler and Kayla Bench were transported to Hamilton Regional Hospital.
The extent of their injuries was not immediately available early Wednesday Morning.
Michael Wilson remained at Scott and White Hospital in stable condition while Wesley Kepler and Raymond Smith were not listed late Wednesday morning.
A nurse at Hamilton Regional Hospital declined to comment on the condition of either Kasey Kepler or Kayla Bench.
The driver of the eighteen-wheeler, Adalberto Marquez, of Covis, N.M. was not injured.
Though the driver of the Ford signaled improperly, Marquez was ticketed for attempting to pass in a no-passing zone, DPS dispatcher Garcia said.
The accident remains under investigation by DPS; other charges are pending that investigation.

Sarah...same goes for the driver of the semi-truck if he was at fault he also would be in jail..theirs comments about paying attention and what should of been done, and by right state of mind i mean paying attention to what he was doing LIKE DRIVING and putting his signal light in the direction of where he was turning..not to the opposite direction..my sympathy goes out to all families..

Anonymous on July 11...how do you know he was not in his right state of mind? Were you in the truck. Why don't you stop accusing people of things until you know the facts. I would think if he wasn't in the right state of mind, he would probably be in jail. The bottom line is two people lost their lives and the driver having to live with that is hard enough w/out people through accusations around. And for those who care to know, the other five people in the accident are doing well with dealing with their physical wounds. The emotional ones are far worse. God bless you guys!
