MEXIA (July 7, 2009)--For the second time in a month a major fire has broken out at an oil recycling plant in Mexia as remains of the first blaze continued to smolder.

The second fire Monday destroyed a second structure that was used to house recycling equipment at the site.

Investigators from the State Fire Marshal's Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Fire Arms still are investigating both fires.

A spokesman for the local fire department told News 10 both fires are considered suspicious in origin.

The plant on Belknap St. just outside the Mexia city limits had employed as many as 30 workers.

The first fire broke out during the overnight hours on June 11 and did an estimated $6 million in damage.

A week later, investigators said the fire’s origin and cause were suspicious.

The plant gathers and recycles used oil products for reuse in heavy machinery and heavy vehicles.

On a trip to Mexia in the afternoon, we saw black smoke, so we drove by it on the 26th not knowing where it was coming from. We have land not to far from there. NO ONE was around, and you could literally see a small fire going inside, and there was a large gas truck less than 50 feet away from the building. I'm not a fireman, but that doesn't seem like a smart idea. If it was suspicous you would think it would be taped off, or locked up, something to keep people out! If you drive down that road, there are alot of sketchy looking people that live around it, in fact the day we drove by a young group of guys where sitting on their front porch drinking and watching the smoke not far away. Come on Mexia cops, get to investigating instead of meeting up at the old Queenie's to shoot the bull.
