LIMESTONE COUNTY (July 9, 2009)—James Ryan Bates, 5, whose sixth birthday would have been next week, died Thursday morning in an accidental shooting at his family’s home on Limestone County Road 771 just outside of Groesbeck.
The boy’s stepbrother, John Mark Hill, who attends college in Austin and returned home after learning of the shooting, told News 10 that Bates and an 8-year-old friend were watching cartoons Thursday morning in a back bedroom where a gun cabinet is kept.
The two were evidently playing with a gun when the 8-year-old accidentally shot the younger boy once in the chest.
Hill said friends of his were watching the boys.
Paramedics from Limestone Medical Center EMS were dispatched Thursday morning to the home at 227 County Road 771 described it as a "tragic scene."
Bates was pronounced dead at the scene just before 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
An autopsy was ordered

I keep reading the comment that it was an accident and could happen to anybody. Know what? It cant happen at my house. We dont have guns and IF we did they would not be loaded where a child could get to it. THAT is incredibly irresponsible. I get so tired of hearing how these country kids are used to guns blah, blah, blah. Apparently not. Kids are kids and they are nosey/curious/however you want to phrase it. Parents, please be responsible adults and do the right thing to protect your children, they dont know how to protect themselves.
