Police Search Lake For Gun After Shooting Leaves Local Man Paralyzed
Mexia police and Texas Department of Public Safety investigators were on Lake Mexia Tuesday searching the waters near the U.S. Highway 84 bridge for a handgun that is believed to have been used in a shooting.

MEXIA (September 22, 2009)—Investigators from the Mexia Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety Tuesday morning were searching the waters of Lake Mexia for a handgun police say was used in a shooting earlier in September that left a Mexia man paralyzed.
Police say a domestic disturbance on Sept. 9 resulted in Daryl Collins of 106 Kaufman St. in Mexia, being shot in the jaw.
The bullet severed Collins’ spinal cord and he now is paralyzed as a result of the wound.
Officers arrested Reginald Hatten, also of Mexia, about an hour after the shooting.
Hatten remains in the Limestone County Jail under a $750,000 bond set by Limestone County Justice of the Peace Fredda Gremminger.
He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Mexia police told News 10 Tuesday morning Hatten had told them he tossed a handgun into the waters of Lake Mexia just south of the US 84 bridge.
