GATESVILLE (October 20, 2009)--A deliveryman was awarded all of his medical expenses plus $1000 in damages Tuesday after a jury in Coryell County found a Copperas Cove woman liable for her pit bull's attack on the man.

Mark Williams was awarded all of his past medical expenses that resulted from the dog bite, plus $500 for his pain and suffering and $500 for his loss of earnings as a result of his time off work.

The 52nd State District Court jury found Ella Avery liable for Williams' injuries.

Williams' attorney, Clifford Wilson, of Houston, says his client was attacked and injured when Williams went into the yard at house to deliver a package.

The court pleading indicates Williams entered the yard at 206 E. Ave. A, in Copperas Cove, and was attacked by a pit bull that being kept in the garage.

I own a pit and have for 7 years and have owned plenty of other"vicious" dogs over the years-like Dobermans,Rotts- and back then they were going thru this same criticism! Pits are what their owners make them! My mailman and water guy,etc can all go thru my yard and my dog wags her tail! But as long as they are in their yard(their enclosure) and they are contained- anyone going in with a Beware of Dog sign there maybe shouldn't go in and should be thinking that sign is there for a reason! If there's any doubt about going in then yell or put a pick up at office note on gate- but don't go in! Pits are no more dangerous then the Rott or Doberman or even a Great Dane- even some Chihuahuas are biters! Leave the "responsible" Pit owners alone- but there are those that are NOT responsible- they should have their dogs taken away- but it's NOT the Pits fault!

Well Anonymous in Austin, if the child is young enough so that he or she can't read the Beware of Dog sign, and roaming around a rural area, then the parents should be responsible, that is the trouble with the world today, people don't take responsibilty for thier actions, or thier lack of common sense. Don't get me wrong, I by nomeans would want to see anyone get hurt, but I also think that if I take precautions to warn you of an aggressive dog and you come onto my property anyway and get bit, then you should be responsible for your actions.
