CENTERVILLE (November 16, 2009)-While a serial rapist remains on the loose, local law enforcement seek public assistance as they step up efforts to protect elderly residents.
Leon County Sheriff Jerry Wakefield says the county needs donations of old cellular phones to reprogram and hand out to older residents of the community.
The search for the serial rapist continues throughout South and Central Texas.
The latest attack on an elderly woman happened in South Texas about two weeks ago. Investigators say it appears an earlier victim was raped again by the same man.
While no official description of the suspect has been released, one victim says her attacker spoke clear english and had a short military-style haircut.
"We'll have them programmed where they just have to hit 1 button and it'll go directly to 911," Wakefield told News 10.
Investigators have identified a pattern where targeted victims of the serial rapist had their phone lines cut prior to the attacks.
Leon county officials believe the cell phones could help many of the elderly as well as any other potential victims protect themselves.
Domestic abuse victims will receive any remaining cell phones not handed out to elderly residents.
Contact the Leon County Sheriff's Office at (903) 536-2749 for more information about how to donate or obtain used cell phones.

I read on KBTX website that almost 200 cell phones were delivered to the Leon County Sheriff's Office. This is a wonderful gesture put forth from Leon County and the surrounding counties that donated so many cell phones. KBTX agreed to be the drop off location for Leon County and they also delivered the phones to the sheriff's office. I also watched video from KBTX interviewing the Leon County Sheriff Jerry Wakefield. This is a awesome idea for the elderly and the needy.
Here is an opportunity for ATT Verizon or Sprint to step in and provide a valuable service with some great pr. I am betting they don't though.
This sounds like a very good idea! Personally I'd rather they spend the money for Right-To-Carry gun classes and furnish these women with guns/ammo.
