WACO (November 17, 2009)—An audition will be held this weekend in Waco as part of the search for a girl from 12 to 16 to play the lead in the new Coen Brothers feature film, “True Grit,” which will be filmed next year.
The Coens have written and directed a series of hit films including “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” “Raising Arizona,” “No Country for Old Men,” and Fargo.
The film’s casting director is looking for “gritty girls” for the role of 14-year-old Mattie, “preferably the kind that rides horses, gets dirty and speaks her mind,” according to a press release announcing the audition.
The auditions are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Dodge Hall at the Heart of Texas Fair Complex at 4601 Bosque Blvd. in Waco.
Those interested in auditioning should bring a current photo.
Experience isn’t necessary.
The movie is a remake of the 1969 film that won John Wayne an Oscar for his portrayal of aging U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn.
Jeff Bridges will play Cogburn in the Coen Brothers film, which like the original, centers on a 14-year-old girl—played by Kim Darby in the original film--who tags along with Cogburn as he searches for the outlaw who killed her father.
The new version, however, will reportedly be told more from the teenager’s point of view.
