SALADO (December 4, 2009)—Investigators say a smoldering cigarette ignited the fire Wednesday night that destroyed a cabin under construction in Salado.
One member of the group of friends building the cabin told Bell County investigators that he had thrown a cigarette earlier in the evening Wednesday on the north side of the cabin.
The wind evidently caught it and then fanned the flames.
The building, which was to be a private getaway for a group of friends, wasn’t insured.
Witnesses said there was a loud explosion Wednesday night before the cabin went up in flames.
