From: Baylor University and the Alive Campaign

(February 4, 2008) -- In order to show a friend, dealing with depression, that there is more to life than what meets the eye, five Baylor University students – Justin Brown, Steve Zimmerman, Andi Nakasone, Kyle Ferguson and Nathan Lloyd – will bike from Waco, Texas, to Anchorage, Alaska, in an effort to raise awareness about the issue of suicide and efforts to prevent the third-leading cause of death among young people ages 15-24.

Known as the Alive Campaign, the students will begin their journey on May 15, 2008, from Fountain Mall on the Baylor campus to Anchorage, where they plan to arrive by Aug. 15, 2008.

The team hopes to create awareness of their suicide prevention campaign primarily through tools on the Internet, such as Facebook, where incredibly the team rallied more than 300,000 supporters in less than three weeks.

To prepare physically for the ride, the team has been following a workout plan, including cardiovascular exercise, bike riding in Waco and nutritional improvements.

This past weekend, the riders made their first extended training ride of 50 miles from Waco to Temple.

I applaud this WONDERFUL group of friends!!!!!!!!!! I think what they are doing is incredibly awesome!!!!! Their friend is so very lucky to have them in his life. Depression is an illness. I am so glad that it is being brought to society's attention. Suicide has hit my family personally....you see I lost my 16 year old daughter on April 25, 2003 to suicide. She battled depression. KUDOS to this group of friends that are bringing attention to suicide awareness.
