(March 27, 2008)--A new study suggests having a big belly in your 40s can increase your risk of getting dementia or Alzheimer's disease later on.
The problem is not simply weight.
The findings show that abdominal fat poses a separate risk, as opposed to fat stored elsewhere.
Even people who aren't overweight but have a good deal of abdominal fat are susceptible.
The tendency has been described as making people apple-shaped rather than pear-shaped.
It's already been linked to a higher risk of developing diabetes, stroke and heart disease.
The study's author says, "Now we can add dementia to that."
The findings are reported in Thursday’s online issue of the journal Neurology.
