(June 17, 2008)—Dr. James Rohack, director of Scott & White’s Center for Healthcare Policy, was named president-elect of the American Medical Association Tuesday.
Once he assumes the presidency of the AMA in 2009, he will act as the official spokesperson for the AMA and will sit on the association’s board of trustees.
Rohack, a resident of Bryan, said the nation faces major healthcare challenges including rising costs, a rising number of uninsured Americans and a looming Medicare funding crisis.
"As AMA president-elect, I look forward to being a voice for American physicians as we work with others to solve America's challenges in providing the best medical care in the world to all, while preserving our sacred patient-physician relationship," Rohack said.
“My voice for our patients and medical profession will be clear, focused and forceful to assure those basic American principles of freedom and choice,” he said.
Rohack is a board-certified cardiologist who serves as a professor of medicine at the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine.
He also serves as medical director for system improvement of the Scott & White Health Plan.
He’s a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso and the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
He was served as president of the Texas Medical Association and the American Heart Association’s Texas affiliate and as a member of the AMA’s board of trustees.
He has been on Scott & White’s staff since 1986.
