(July 17, 2008)—A new report says an investment of as little as $10 per person could go a long way toward improving the nation’s health.
Researchers say that the price of a six-pack of beer and some chips could fuel community programs that get couch potatoes moving, prevent smoking and improve nutrition.
Invested over five years, the nation could cut health care costs by more than $16 billion annually, according to the analysis from the nonprofit Trust for America's Health and a team of public-health research groups.
Obesity, from poor nutrition and inactivity, and smoking are blamed for much of the nation's heart disease, cancer, diabetes and lung diseases.
Those are the nation's leading public health problems, fueling the $2 trillion spent annually on healthcare.
