(July 25, 2008)--Frustrated researchers say the effort to develop an effective AIDS vaccine is going to require "enormous intellectual leaps."
The researchers, including a top official of the National Institutes of Health, want new people with new ideas to step up and join the search.
They say the focus should be on discovering a vaccine rather than on clinical trials for evaluating medicines that may or may not work.
Throughout the world, there are more than 6,500 new HIV infections every day.
In a recent high-profile trial, a potential vaccine not only failed to prevent infection, but also appeared to increase the infection risk for those who got it compared to those who didn't.
A broad team of researchers wrote the article for the journal Science.
