(August 15, 2008)—The salmonella outbreak that sickened hundreds in Texas and around the country is winding down, but federal health officials still don’t know why the few tainted Mexican peppers health investigators found could explain the widespread illness that has affected 1,400 people.

The FDA's Dr. David Acheson says the outbreak isn't over yet.

He says the FDA is focusing its probe on some farms in Mexico where a handful of jalapeno and serrano peppers and some irrigation water tainted with salmonella were traced.

Two of them sent produce to a common packing facility.

The FDA is still working with Mexican authorities to determine exactly what happened in that facility.
