(August 23, 2008)--Canadian officials say they could know Saturday whether four listeriosis deaths are linked to a meat recall by a Toronto company.

The fourth death was reported Friday as Canadian food safety officials investigated a total of 17 infections to determine if they're linked to tainted meat products.

Three of the deaths were in Ontario; the fourth was in British Columbia.

Twenty-three varieties of ready-to-eat Maple Leaf Foods meat products manufactured in Toronto have been recalled.

Listeriosis is a kind of food poisoning that can be dangerous to the elderly, newborns, pregnant women and people with chronic medical conditions.

Symptoms include fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
