(October 3, 2008)—Consuming tiny amounts of the industrial chemical melamine generally isn’t harmful, unless the melamine is in baby formula, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Friday.
A safety assessment by the FDA concluded that 2.5 parts per million, which is a tiny amount, isn’t cause for concern.
Melamine-tainted infant formula and milk have sickened and killed children in China, and authorities here have discovered melamine in some Chinese candies.
The FDA said Friday it’s not able to establish a level of melamine and melamine-related compounds in infant formulas “that does not raise public health concerns” primarily because of “gaps in our scientific knowledge about the toxicity of melamine.”
