(October 28, 2008)--Cold sufferers often leave their germs on TV remotes, salt shakers and other household items, where the germs can live for two days or more, a new study finds.
Scientists at the University of Virginia conducted the study in the homes of 30 people with colds and tests showed germs on all three of the salt-and-pepper shakers tested and six out of 10 remote controls.
Other germ hot spots were light switches, doorknobs, phones, refrigerator handles and bathroom faucets.
A separate study was conducted on toys at pediatricians' office, where tests showed signs of cold viruses on 20 percent of all toys tested.
The studies were presented at a joint meeting of the American Society for Microbiology and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
