(November 17, 2008)--Federal health statistics point to Huntington, W.Va. as the unhealthiest city in the U.S.
Nearly half the adults in Huntington's five-county metropolitan area are obese, thanks to fatty diets and lack of exercise, which is far more than the national average, in a country with a well-known weight problem.
Huntington leads in a-half-dozen other illness measures, too, including heart disease and diabetes and it’s even tops in the percentage of elderly people who have lost all their teeth.
About half of the elderly residents have.
The healthiest city in the U.S. appears to be Burlington, Vt.
Vermont’s largest city is tops among U.S. metropolitan areas by having the largest proportion of people who say they are in good or great health, 92 percent.
It's also among the best in exercise and among the lowest in such measures of ill health as obesity and diabetes.
The statistics come from a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study that went largely unnoticed when it was released in August.
