(November 19, 2008)—A groundbreaking stem cell transplant in Spain has given a Colombian woman a new lease on life.

Doctors performed the first-ever whole organ transplant using the woman’s own stem cells.

The 30-year-old woman suffered from tuberculosis, which damaged her lungs and made it hard for her to breathe.

Instead of removing her left lung, a doctor at the Barcelona Hospital Clinic proposed a trachea transplant as an alternative.

Doctors lined a donor's windpipe with stem cells from the woman's bone marrow from her hip to create cartilage and tissue cells.

The surgery was performed five months ago and doctors say the woman is doing well.
