(September 10, 2007)--Confused by the complicated nutrition facts labels on foods?
The Food and Drug Administration is considering supplementing them with easy-to-understand symbols to help shoppers make healthier choices.
It's holding a two-day hearing to consider several ideas.
They include a "traffic light" system used by some British food processors.
A green, yellow or red light on the label tells consumers whether a food is low, medium or high in fat, salt and sugar.
Some American companies already have come up with their own symbols.
PepsiCo places a "Smart Spot" on diet Pepsi and baked Lay's chips.
The New England supermarket chain Hannaford uses zero to three stars to rate the nutrition of more than 25,000 items.
The chairman of the Senate agriculture committee wants the FDA to establish a single set of nutrition symbols.
Any final action is considered years away.
