(July 20, 2008)--The political call for summertime gas-tax holiday has been replaced with quiet talks about whether to raise fuel taxes.
Candidates John McCain and Hillary Clinton both pushed for a suspension of federal gas taxes from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but the move would have cost the Highway Trust Fund $9 billion at a time when it’s already headed toward a projected $3 billion deficit.
Now, lawmakers are talking about actually raising fuel taxes by a dime, from the current 18.4 cents a gallon on gasoline and 24.3 cents on diesel fuel.
