Starbucks To Cut Even Deeper Save Email Print

A | A | A

(July 29, 2008)—Starbucks earlier announced plans to shut 600 stores and now the chain says it will also cut almost a thousand non-store jobs as part of a bid to re-energize the brand and boost profits by cutting costs.

In a letter to all employees, CEO Howard Schultz said the gourmet coffee chain is reducing the number of positions and partners across the country.

The job cuts are in addition to the layoffs from the store closures.

Starbucks has said it will shut down 600 underperforming locations, the first 50 of which are being closed this month.

Starbucks has been working to transfer employees in stores that are being closed to other locations.

In the letter, Schultz said about 70 percent of those employees have been transferred.

The store-closing plan claimed just one casualty in Central Texas, the Starbucks at the intersection of West Waco Drive and North Valley Mills Drive in Waco.

I agree, their coffee is way too expensive, I can go to any other place and pay less, why does a "large "cup of coffee have to be called a "venti" what does that really mean. I enjoy my nice cup of coffee like most people, but can't see why they have to charge so much because their service personnel have to have such a fancy name "Barista", I pay enough for Gas from a normal attendant, and sure would not go out of my way to buy my gas from someone with a fancy title because the gas would probably go for somewhere around $12 a gallon due to the mark up. Come on people and smell the coffee, it is just roasted coffee beans, water, and what ever you want to add to it after than and all that costs pennies at the local HEB.

Maybe they wouldn't have to close so many locations if their coffee wasn't so expensive.
