(August 27, 2008)--Stocks posted gains in light trading Wednesday as investors reacted to a stronger-than-expected report on July durable goods orders.
The Dow added nearly 90 points to 11,502.
The S&P gained 10 to 1,281.
The Nasdaq surged 20 points to 2,382.
Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by more than 3 to 1.
New York Stock Exchange volume topped 3.3 billion shares.
The Nasdaq stock market volume was 1.5 billion shares.
Benchmark crude rose $1.88 to settle at $118.15 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange because of worries about Tropical Storm Gustav.
