(August 29 2008)--Stocks were lower Friday as investors took a cautious stance heading into the long Labor Day weekend.
The Dow fell 171 points to 11,543, down 0.7 percent for the week.
The S&P dropped nearly 18 points to 1,282, down 0.8 percent for the week.
The Nasdaq composite fell 44 points to 2,367, off about 2 percent for the week.
Declining issues topped advancers by a 5 to 3 margin.
NYSE volume came to nearly 3 billion shares, while there were 1.5 billion shares traded on the Nasdaq stock market.
Oil prices slipped to end the trading week.
Light, sweet crude for October delivery fell 14 cents to settle at $115.46 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
