(September 2, 2008)--Key averages settled with modest declines Tuesday, failing to sustain a rally connected to a sharp drop in oil prices.

The Dow fell 26 points to 11,516.

The S&P 500 edged down 5 points to 1,277.

The Nasdaq composite lost 18 points to 2,349.

Advancers led decliners on the New York Stock Exchange by a 17 to 14 margin.

Volume on the NYSE came to 4.6 billion shares.

Nasdaq stock market volume was nearly 2 billion shares.

As traders reacted to indications that oil production capacity in the Gulf of Mexico was not heavily damaged from Hurricane Gustav, crude dropped $5.75 to settle at $109.71.
