(September 2, 2008)--Jamaica's biggest banana company will temporarily halt exports of the staple fruit after Hurricane Gustav flattened entire plantations as it raked the length of the island last week.
Marshall Hall, chairman of Jamaica Producers Group, which accounts for the large majority of the Caribbean country's banana exports, said the storm damaged more than 70 percent of farms producing the key crop and it's not clear when exports will resume.
Hall spoke to reporters Tuesday after surveying damage from Gustav, which caused extensive flooding and toppled trees.
