(September 5, 2008)--Stocks managed a mixed close Friday after the Labor Department reported that the nation's jobless rate soared to 6.1 percent in August, but overall it was a down and holiday-shortened week for the major averages.
The Dow gained nearly 33 points to 11,220. For the week, the Dow was down 2.8 percent.
The S&P rose 5 and a-half points to 1,242, down more than 3 percent this week.
The Nasdaq composite index was down 3 points at 2,255, off 4.7 percent for the week.
Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a slim margin on the New York Stock Exchange.
Volume on the NYSE came to 4.9 billion shares. Nasdaq stock market volume was 2.2 billion shares.
Light, sweet crude for October delivery fell $1.66 to settle at $106.23.
