(October 13, 2008)—The Dow staged its biggest single-point gain ever Monday, soaring more than 900 points after an eight-session losing streak.
Based on preliminary data, the index rose 936 points or 11 percent to 9,387.
It came as governments around the world announced new steps aimed at supporting the banking system.
The S&P rose 104 points to 1,003.
The Nasdaq composite added 194 points to 1,844.
Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 16 to 1 margin on the New York Stock Exchange.
Volume was 6.9 billion shares on the NYSE.
Nasdaq stock market volume was 2.6 billion shares.
