(October 14, 2008)—The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has granted an air permit for a 1,000-megawatt power plant that Panda Energy plans to build in Temple.
Company officials say the plant will pump more than $500 million into the Central Texas economy in the next decade.
"The approval of the air permit is a major step toward construction of this project," said Todd Carter, president of Panda Energy International.
"Thanks to continued strong support from local and state officials, we continue to move forward.”
The Dallas-based company announced plans in December 2007 to build the plant on a 250-acre site in the South Temple Industrial Park.
Construction will take about two years, depending on financing, regulatory approvals and other conditions, the company said.
As many as 500 workers will be hired to build the plant, which will employ about 70 when it’s operational, the company said.

When finished the plant will be capable of meeting the power needs of about 750,000 homes in Central and North Texas, the company said.
Panda once operated natural-gas-fired plants in Guadalupe, Odessa and Paris, but a spokesman says the company has sold those facilities.
