Stocks Stage Election Day Rally Save Email Print

(November 4, 2008)--As Americans went to the polls Tuesday investors were buying stocks.

The key averages rose more than 3 percent.

The Dow was up 305 points to 9,625.

The S&P 500 surged 39 points to 1,005.

The Nasdaq composite gained nearly 54 points to 1,780.

Advancing issues topped decliners by a more than 3-1 margin.

Volume on the NYSE came to 5.3 billion shares, while Nasdaq stock market volume was 2.3 shares.

Oil futures rose as well.

Light, sweet crude for December delivery rose $6.62 to settle at $70.53.
