(January 5, 2009)--Key stock market averages lost ground to begin the week Monday, and the broader market was mixed.

The Dow fell nearly 82 points to 8,952.

The S&P 500 dropped 4 points to 927.

The Nasdaq composite declined 4 points to 1,628.

Advancing issues actually led decliners by a 2 to 1 margin on the New York Stock Exchange.

Some 4.7 billion shares changed hands on the NYSE.

About1.8 billion shares were traded on the Nasdaq stock market.
