AUSTIN (August 15, 2009)--The struggling economy is taking a toll on sales tax collections in Central Texas and around the state, according to the latest figures from the Texas Comptroller’s Office.

Texas state sales tax collections for July were down 11.6 percent compared to last July, Comptroller Susan Combs says.

Combs sent $544 million in August sales tax allocations to local governments, which is down 6.8 percent compared to August 2008.

So far this calendar year, allocations to local governments are down 2.2 percent compared to the same time a year ago.

Killeen’s August sales tax allocation check was down 3.92 percent compared to last year. For the year, Killeen’s allocation is down 8.8 percent.

Temple’s August allocation check was down 3.97 percent. For the year, Temple’s allocation is down 2.15 percent.

Waco’s August allocation check was down 3.71 percent. For the year, Waco’s allocation is down 0.43 percent.

“Sales tax collections in July were again down significantly as major sectors of the economy, such as retail trade; oil and natural gas; and construction, remain weak,” Combs said.

“The sharp drop in revenue is a reflection of the current poor performance of these sectors as well as unusually strong sales tax collections in July 2008.”

To Gary: If your vote does not count than how are you going to be heard. Are you going to do nothing during election time and let idiots continue to be re-elected? A vote is the first step in stopping the trend of absolute power. I agree with you that these morons are in it all together. That is why I say vote them all out! How else is Palin, Paul, etc. get into D.C. As long as the country is divided, than these low lifes will continue to function with same old business. Vote them out, stand up and fight and never turst the main stream media. I see you are involved and hope more voters like yourself share our views.

Re Sam Bam: If you still believe our votes count for anything, you need to wake up! And even if our votes do count, we don't have a choice because no matter who is elected, they'll play the same POLITICAL GAME, which is the reason everything keeps getting worse for the people instead of better. And in the federal government, there IS NO two-party system anymore; they're ALL part of the Washington DC Party, and anyone who isn't part of that Washington DC Party, like Ron Paul and Sarah Palin, are either ignored as being crazy, constantly ridiculed, or accused of some manufactured criminal offense.

Are you all enjoying the "change" ?? Our country is going down the toilet, and it seems that a lot of you are standing by watching it. Don't take what you read as face value, start doing the math and make a difference...vote!!!
