WASHINGTON (October 9, 2009)--A Labor Department report says the number of jobseekers competing for each opening is at the highest point since the recession began in December of 2007.
On average, about 6.3 unemployed workers are competing for each job opening, the most since the department began keeping track nine years ago.
When the recession began, 1.7 workers competed for each opening.
Employers have cut a net total of 7.2 million jobs during the downturn.
The report indicates that while layoffs are slowing, hiring has yet to resume.
The department's Job Openings and Labor Turnover survey found fewer than 2.4 million openings in August, the latest data available, down from 3.7 million a year ago and half its peak in June 2007.
It's also the lowest tally on nine years of government records
