Stocks Retreat From Early Highs On Light Trading Day Monday
Stocks gave up most of their early gains Monday at the start of a busy week of earnings reports.

NEW YORK (October 12, 2009)--Stocks gave up most of their early gains Monday at the start of a busy week of earnings.

The Dow Jones industrials reached a new trading high of of 9,931 Monday, less than 70 points from 10,000, but pared those gains in afternoon trading.

According to preliminary calculations, the Dow was up 20 at 9,885.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up 4 at 1,076 while the Nasdaq composite index fell 0.14 to 2,139.

Trading was light on the Columbus Day holiday and bond markets were closed.

Advancing stocks narrowly outpaced declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 944 million shares.
