NEW YORK (November 12, 2009)--A drop in energy stocks dragged the market lower Thursday after a government report that consumers and businesses cut their use of oil and gas.

Thursday's report of a jump in petroleum supplies stirred worries that falling energy demand was a sign of weakness in the economy.

The slide in energy shares upended an early advance led by technology stocks as Intel Corp. said it would pay $1.25 billion to Advanced Micro Devices Inc. to settle legal disputes.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 94 at 10,197.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index was down 11 at 1,087.

The Nasdaq composite index was down 18 at 2,149.

Four stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange.

Volume totaled 1 billion, in line with Wednesday.
