NEW YORK (November 17, 2009)--Major stock indexes posted modest gains Tuesday as higher commodity prices lifted energy and materials stocks.
Tuesday’s advances were enough to push major stock indexes to new 13-month highs after the market zigzagged for much of trading as the dollar rebounded.
Retailers' earnings reports are offering little insight into how much consumers are spending, which is one source of worry on Wall Street.
Retailers Home Depot Inc., Saks Inc. and Target Corp. all remain cautious.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 30 at 10,437.
The S&P 500 index was up 1 at 1,110.
The Nasdaq composite index was up 6 at 2,204.
Falling stocks narrowly outpaced those that rose on the New York Stock Exchange.
Volume totaled 972 million shares compared with 1.1 billion Monday.
