State Supreme Court Overturns Gay Marriage Ban Save Email Print

A | A | A

(May 15, 2008)--The California Supreme Court overturned a voter-approved ban on gay marriage Thursday in a 4-3 ruling that domestic partnerships are not a good enough substitute.

The ruling clears the way for same-sex couples to tie the knot in California.

Gay marriage supporters cheered and hugged as the Supreme Court decision on was announced on the courthouse steps in San Francisco.

The 120-page ruling said there is no doubt that "extending the designation of marriage to same-sex couples, rather than denying it to all couples, is the equal protection remedy that is most consistent with our state's general legislative policy and preference."

for heavens sake..would you people listen to yourselves.. do think God would approve of what you are saying here. No He probably wouldn't.. BUT..HE created you just like HE did gay people.. and HE loves you both just the same.. To susiebw..special rights..give me a break..they are fighting for equal rights..rights to be able to provide for their families.. yes they have families just like straight people do... being married would allow their partner righgts to thier property.. property they aquired together..don't you think they have a right to what is theirs..this would help them protect that..so thier parents and siblings who may be as closed minded as you can't step in and push them out.. how would you feel if the doctors at the hospital wouldn't let you see your partner in their time of need... you people need to open your minds and your hearts just as God teaches us to

We know what happened to the 2 cities... Sodom & Gomorrah, where the word sodomy came from. This is not the natural order of the universe whether human or animal. I don't agree with the lifestyle these people choose and I don't have a problem with their civil unions. BUT, marriage is a sacred bond by God that a MAN AND A WOMAN shall be come "one". If our justice system refuses "marriage" as it has always been, then ...like one comment says... our degenerate society will turn into one big Free-For-All.

I have no problem w/gays decisions b/c I'm not the final judge. The so called "righteous" person may not completely please God and the biggest sinner might do the 1 right thing 2 seal his salvation so no judging! But my concern is the comparison of gay marriages to interracial marriages. NOT THE SAME! Man's law thought races shouldn't mix & tried 2 stop it. It was changed b/c it was unjust. But GOD'S LAW says MAN & WOMAN so same sex is a violation! So I guess the decision lies w/which law u choose 2 follow. Just don't misconstrue God's Word! God nor I hate the sinner; we dislike the SIN. I don't agree w/gay marriage anymore than I agree w/theft or lying. All a sin. And remember, THIS WORLD will become the LIVING HELL anyway so stop worrying about what occurs in THIS WORLD. Things r happening according 2 plan...

How come none of the gay women they show on tv getting married are attractive? Like the ones you see on the internet.

Posted by: TEXASLEGAL on May 16, 2008 at 05:57 PM
The first thing a gay couple want is a child. Well, they can't create one naturally so then they want to adopt. So where is the line drawn on who has the authority to place a child in a gay household, and why should they allow a child to be placed in a situation like that? We all know that child will grow up tormented at school and in society in general because of two moms or two dads. So why should we allow that to happen?

u ppl in Texas are so closed minded, and it is none of your business who gets married and who does not, its not affecting u, so why do u even care?

Posted by: Franky Location: Temple on May 16, 2008 at 03:12 PM
I have nothing against gay people but, i dont think they should be allowed to get married. This will lead to them wanting to adopt children; you think kids are out of control now with a mother and father figure! wait till you have two moms or two dads. So would the kid just not believe in mothers day if he had 2 fathers? lol. i dont see how people will stand up for homosexuals to death, and when asked what they prefer their kids to be the say "straight". quit being a hypocrite!

Let me get some things straight...i re-read my post from 10:17 and what i meant was i don't believe in intentional sin..something like murder, stealing, etc. I understand that everyone should be happy and others have no business telling them not to...but at the same time people have to realize that this is just earth. I for one would rather be happy in Heaven...fight temptation, so that you may be Happy in Heaven, that is for eternity! Why should we be forced to help people do wrong, instead of them help them do right?

Posted by: susiebw Location: kempner on May 16, 2008 at 02:24 PM
To "Supportive" ..they already have equal rights, just like all of us. They are fighting for "special rights" To anonymous from Central Texas....if you think it's wonderful that gay people will be foster parents then you don't know much about what they do with kids. Wake up! God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. He intends for there to be one woman/one man. It's a terrible thing to promote or approve this deviant behavior. The Bible is very clear on what their future is, and if you promote or condone it, I would assume you will join them. It is an insult and a rejection of The Creator.

Posted by: Fran Location: W. TEXAS on May 16, 2008 at 01:26 PM
GOD will deal with ALL the GAYS in this world, because this is NOT what is s'pose to be! I agree with Anon, in Belton...we have taken God out of the schools because of a FEW, now we are being FORCED to accept this behavior! God will get them in the END!!! DON'T push you FILTH on me! YOU want to be gay...Go start your own GAY Country and YOU can MAKE you own LAWS. There you can be FREE to do whatever you want! Just LEAVE the U.S., where MOST of the citizen believe that being GAY is SINNING!

Posted by: K Location: Mexia on May 16, 2008 at 01:20 PM
Stephanie, do you honestly think that your way of communicating can bring people to Jesus. Most gay people are born that way, ask a couple or do you not know any gay people? I know gay people that are christian, for you to say that being gay is just like murder, you are not living in the real world, would you rather you child live with a loving gay woman in a christian home or with a murderer? Think about what you are saying and what it truly is? what is it. Jesus said to the thief on the cross, today you will be with me, the Bible also says sin is sin, So when you sin today and you will as I will, it is sin, not a little sin but sin. If you are striving to reach people for God a change in your attitude and appraoch would probally be you best choice. What would you say to gay Christians or do you think they don't exist?

Posted by: John E. Location: Salado, TX on May 16, 2008 at 01:12 PM
If gay people want to get married, then let them get married. They have fought the hard fight for a long time. However... maybe we should outlaw gay DIVORCES. If a gay married couple wants a divorce, the judge could say, "Sorry, you fought a long hard fight to be married, so you've gotta stick with it forever. Tough it out."

Posted by: Stephanie Location: Waco on May 16, 2008 at 12:55 PM
To K...I never said that I was sinless, nor has anyone else on here, I am a Christian also, and we are taught that you have to try not to sin, and be like God, but obviously it is not possible, but as Christian's we try to live up to that, letting unintentional sins slip by, but being gay is something that can be controlled. Some people go all through life without church and God, speaking our minds as Christians is probably the only way that they will learn, so I am not going to sit here and tell them that being gay, being a murderer or a thief is ok. That is why I think from the very beginning children should grow up with a father and a mother. I am not judging them, I am just simply letting them know what it truly is!

Posted by: PM Location: Gville on May 16, 2008 at 12:31 PM
Stephanie...you are an idiot! You act like being gay is contagious. You "don't believe in sin"?? I don't think it matters whether you believe in it or not...it is still alive and well!! lol That is the most ridiculous thing I have seen. I actually laughed out loud when I read what you posted!! NO ONE is perfect and NONE of us have the right to judge anyone else, just as we don't want to be judged. We all have our difference of opinions, but all I can say is "To each his own"!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: belton on May 16, 2008 at 11:42 AM
If a small percentage of people can take god out of schools because they feel it aginest their rights as an American. Why can't we say as the mojority of Americans we feel that it is imoral and aginst our right and beliefs and we don't want to be around that kind of lifestyle. DON'T make us part of an imoral life choice. Our Country needs more people to speak up and say NO we won't tollerate that kind of lifestyle

Posted by: Supportive of the Decision Location: TX on May 16, 2008 at 11:25 AM
I am very happy that the ruling was overturned. Who is anyone to say that two people, no matter what their orientaion is, can't be happy? If two people are happy and love each, no matter if the are man and man, man and woman or woman and woman, let them be happy. Who are we to stop that? It just goes to show how many "closed minded" people we have in this world. I am a happily married to woman to a wonderful man. I think that everyone is entitled to be happy, NO MATTER WHAT!! That is the one thing that sickens me more than anything is people who have nothing better to do than down gay people. They are human beings too and have a right to happines. They have overcome so much in the last 20 years and I hope they continue their fight for equal rights!

You who are without sin, cast the first stone and there seems to be alot of sinless people out there. I am a Christian who tries to spread the love of God by words and actions, Jesus walked and lived among those who needed him most and changed hearts with kindness and goodness. He was a very different man and most authority felt that he was an abomination during the time of his teaching. Be very careful here.

Posted by: Stephanie Location: Waco on May 16, 2008 at 10:17 AM
I agree completely with Rick! I think children should grow up with a father & mother istead of Mommy1 & 2...that way if they do become gay it will be soley on what they want not what was put into their head while growing up. Gay marriage is an abomination, it is not supposed to be and I for one do not agree with it, just as I don't believe in murder or any other SIN!

This ruling is yet another sign that the liberal foundations of this country, when taken to their logical extremes, are unsteady and about to fall. Departure from ordered freedom and natural law has paved the way for society to degenerate into one big free-for-all, with no security of the individual or of the corporations that comprise society. When will we learn that we cannot give everyone what they want just because they want it, that some things are necessarily one way and only one way, because that is their general design? Can we expect a toaster to properly melt hot glue for adhesive purposes or a glue gun to make toast? No, we use a glue gun for adhesion, and a toaster to make toast. Why should we think that gay marriage will result in the same sort of stable society that heterosexual marriage does? Heterosexual marriage is designed for stability and procreation, while gay marriage is designed for instability and sterility, self-service rather than mutuality.

As for "future foster parents for CPS"; I say yes. Children need loving parents and you do not have to be straight to do that. Tx is in dire need of qualified and good foster parents, no matter the sexual orientation. You might want to be careful; your ignorance is showing.

Who's surprised from Californicate?

Posted by: Anonymous Location: waco on May 15, 2008 at 02:05 PM
So the Cal. Supreme Court thinks it is above and not answerable to the majority of the voters in their state. I think I would want a court that was for the people and not above them.
